Through a Glass Darkly

Here are the basic numbers used in Numerology: 1 through 9, 11, and 22. Other systems use other numbers (33, 44; some books I have include meanings for all the numbers 1 through 78), but these can always be reduced down to the basics, and most systems I’ve seen just use these. The Positive and Negative words are from Daniel Heydon’s Little Giant Encyclopedia of Numerology; the last set is from my own notes.

My own way of remembering what the numbers mean is to remember the “image,” and to realize that the positive meanings are applicable when that image is in full flower; the negative ones are for when that image is being denied or resisted. This doesn’t mean a lot for date numerology, but comes into its own when considering personal and/or name numbers, which we’ll get to in a bit. Signs are also included for 1-9, for those who know that system. Hope it Helps!

1: Positive: originality — willpower — independence — courage — active — initiative — leadership — self-reliance — individuality
Negative: arrogance — selfishness — ego problems — pushiness — domineering — contrariness — stubbornness — false pride — self-willedness
Leadership; “Creativity and Confidence;” creative, original, dominating, loyal, impatient of detail. Sign: Aries. Image: one person; “sovereign individual” (a good day for beginnings)

2: Positive: cooperative — diplomatic — emotional — kindness/love — sensitivity — gentleness — consideration — poetry/music — rhythm/balance — receptive/charming
Negative: easily hurt — imitative — impressionable — thoughtlessness — hypersensitivity — pettiness — overdependence — crying over spilled milk — insecurity — shy/doormat
Cooperation; “Cooperation and Balance;” adaptable, serving, shy, diplomatic, self-effacing.  Sign: Taurus. Image: a couple; two people in love (a good day for listening to others and collaboration)

3: Positive: joy/optimism — childlike/friendly — self-expression — social/popular — communication — pleasure — love of beauty — entertainment — performer
Negative: superficiality — gossipy — triviality — vain/jealous — extravagance — immaturity — dilettantism — laziness — wasteful
Artistic; “Expression and Sensitivity;” energetic, cheerful, stimulating, enthusiastic, intellectual. Sign: Gemini. Image: Family; parents + child (a good day to create something)

4: Positive: self-disciplined — work — practical — know-how — patient — duty — loyal — long-term goals — systematic — conservative — serious — sensible
Negative: overly cautious — stinginess — square — rigid/plodding — inhibited — dogmatism — narrow-minded — cold/repressed — sometimes cruel — overly strict — reactionary — jealousy
Work; “Stability and Process;” austerity, obedience, punctuality, meticulousness, method.  Sign: Cancer. Image: four sides of a square; four seasons (a good day to get stuff done)

5: Positive: freedom/adventure — change/ingenuity — mentally curious — adaptable/versatile — learns from experience — sex/the five senses — innovative/progressive — travel/social/variety
Negative: irresponsibility — shortsightedness — opportunistic — restless/impulsive — undisciplined — self-indulgent/libertine — rebellious/thoughtless — love ‘em and leave ‘em type

11: Positive: idealism/intuition — mysticism — christ-like — prophet — charisma — visionary — inventive and inspired — psychic ability — revelation — spiritual vision — zeal/martyrdom — artistic talents
Negative: fanaticism — dishonesty — messianic complex — false prophet — deviltry — high-strung — fantasy — escapism — self-glorification — notoriety — mercenary (see also negative for 2.)
